Another Bloomsday, another year I have failed to finish Joyce’s Ulysses. This book is seriously becoming my unicorn, my albatross, (and on a somewhat different level) my literary raison d’ĂȘtre.
Here’s the quote I posted on my live journal about a million years ago. If you like these three sentences, you really should give Ulysses a try. If you start now, it’s likely you’ll finish before I do.
“Every life is many days, day after day. We walk through ourselves, meeting robbers, ghosts, giants, old men, young men, wives, widows, brothers-in-love. But always meeting ourselves.” Ulysses pg. 210
Dear Philip Pullman:
I promise to read Ulysses before I die (and you and I both know that will make me only the second person to ever accomplish this) and I will dedicate this act of self-torture to you if you’ll only WRITE ANOTHER BOOK!!!
So, will reading this book make you a better person? Smarter? Sexier? Hmmm, so why is it such a big thing? I’m just saying…
James Joyce as a graphic novel? Believe it!
