newtons

The other day, one of my georgia friends called me and said, “Hey, guess what, they’re about to play one of the Newtons’ songs without you…” and sure enough, in the background, i heard Alex singing our wildly-popular-in-Germany song called Paid Off.

At first i was thinking, man how great, they are still rockin’! Then, instantly, i had 3425 questions, but the person on the other side probably couldn’t hear me, and hung up. Where were they playing? Who was filling in for me? Where did they get the PA? What’s the set list? Has Alex written any new songs? What would it be like to be sitting in the audience? Who’s doing the sound for them? Why aren’t i there right now?

Then came the somewhat overwhelming, mind-quieting wash of emotion. I love being part of a band, i love recording a band, i love creating music.

I know it got crazy when I called and couldnt understand you.. Sorry about that. Mercer sponsored a “Mercer mixer”, which brought out students to hear from SGA students and faculty. I didnt stay long, but the band was playing “Paid Off” when I arrived. There’s an ATO band called the Alpha Zeta Standard, which features Stephen Spalding, Stephen Dominy (a new brother), Matt Bland and David Milligan; they played before the band which Alex played for.. (They were a “featured” group) After the Alpha Zeta standard played jazz covers, the new band came up. I dont really know who replaced you, I didnt recognize the guy. They played for a huge crowd, maybe 200 or so, and everything was set up by the SGA. It sounded wonderful though. I dont know if that makes you feel any better or not… but people loved it. The weather was perfect. Reminded me of April 15, when the Newtons played their show on Porter Patch. Sorry again it was so nuts and I couldnt really understand you..

No one’s stopping you from being part of one here. You and your music friends should get together soon in a big ‘ole field somewhere and play as loud as you can…until the cops tell ya’ll to stop! hehe

  3. des,

the problem is the BR music friends need a ringleader… we’re just a bunch of ambivalent guitarist over in this neck of the woods!
