whoops, another nice diversion from studying. i love the final couplet.

“The Angel” by Michael McFee from Earthly [courtesy The Writer's Almanac]

unhooks her wings after another long day.
They are her glory but also a burden,
binding her chest and making her sacrum ache.
She reaches behind herself to unfasten
them without the least hesitation or thought,
letting the sweaty wings collapse to the floor.

The angel scratches a ticklish spot
and starts to let down the radiant hair
sometimes mistaken for a halo,
unweaving her braid as gracefully
as she composed its strands long ago.
But how can those backward fingers see?

And then she slips off her slip in the dark.
My heart is tinder to that holy spark.

so the last few weeks in april are usually pretty bad for us college kids. exams, term papers, deadlines, mucho stress, ect.while procrastinating today i found a great bit of advice from one of my favorite bloggers, danny gregory. There are some edgy ideas in there, but I found it quite refreshing. Occasionally, it’s good to be jolted into looking at the big picture.

quick update

couple fridays ago the newtons set up a recording studio in the Inter-Fraternal Council House (the IFC house where 3 of the 4 guys who live there are ATO’s). we played there for about 6 hours with a dinner break in the middle. It was about midnight by then, and the one dude who isn’t an ATO wanted to go to sleep. But we still wanted to jam out. So we took down the recording equipment and packed all the instruments in the trucks (in a light mist) and we moved it all over to the venerable Newton Chapel, where we cranked volumes and rocked Newton until 4 am.

It was probably the most amazing, energetic, non-stop jam session i’ve ever had. David Milligan playing the gigantic pipe organ, everyone dancing around on stage and off, Adam Nelson (roadie/additional performer) blowing the daylights out of a harmonica at some times and running down the aisles with a gigantic cape flowing behind him at others. Everyone switching instruments, taking pictures while playing, rocking the house one minute and sweetly serenading in another. Wow. the best show ever. Minus the audience.

Hokay. so. The week goes by, we schedule a concert on the 15th of april (tomorrow). We’ve been practicing almost every day this week. It’s our first concert officially as the Newtons, playing cover songs AND originals. Our fans are rabidly publicizing for us, one of the brothers is building a small stage, and we got these guys to haul all their live sound gear (PA, monitors, mics) in and help us set up. And it’s awesome.

also last friday i played ultimate frisbee on a slippery-wet field with my brothers for a long, long time. it seemed like we played for 2 hours, but i’m not sure. that was crazy… nobody had cleats and we were making crazy slides and flips because we couldn’t stop.

Meanwhile, i’ve been non-stop busy. I talked to my dad yesterday, and he agrees that April is always a tough month. the final round of tests is coming up within the next 2 or 3 weeks, then i’m launched directly into EXAM week and i am outa here. Just a few more weeks of focus, dave… sigh. Finishing up class requirements, trying to maintain good grades, thinking about LSU next year, etc.

a few more weeks.
