now that i have an answering machine hooked up to my phone, i can meticulously keep track of all the people who try to contact either me or my roomie.
sometimes i’m playing guitar and cannot hear the telephone, the machine picks up and i have the opportunity to call back whomever i missed. sometimes joey and i are asleep and we do not want to wake up to get the phone, so the machine takes the call for us. And sometimes, inmates at a local jail randomly dial this number and leave mysterious pleading messages.
That’s right, last night i got a call from such a person. I was not in at the time, and so when the machine picked up, this message was recorded.
Although it is difficult to decipher, the short bit of audio at the beginning goes as follows:
(in south georgia drawl) “Please accept this call, i need you to do me a favor, please…”
all i can say is, “Poor fella”.
so.
Poor fella.
in other news, This weekend is especially cool because i don’t have to go to classes on Monday (thanks, Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.)
Tonight i attended a Percussion concert. It was wonderful. My music technology professor (you know, the one who thinks he hates macs) is the percussion instructor here. He played all sorts of pieces (including one that he wrote) using all kinds of drums, a marimba, cymbals, and bells, and even featured a guest flutist on one. Since i met the drum guy down my hall, i’ve paid a lot more attention to the texture and the rhythmic complexity of drum beats and technique. On one piece, all he used was a single piccolo snare drum. i heard so much expression and, at times, power, that i couldn’t help but hear the beats as poetry, staccato, rolling and vibrant; the one essential part of music (the rhythm) screaming and whispering, intensified by its solo performance. On another piece, with the flutist, he played the marimba while the flutist played her instrument like a Shakuhachi, a japanese bamboo flute. It was perfect. it was also desiree’s favorite piece.
That got me all pumped up about music. So now i really want to record some stuff. There are many, many other things i must do besides record, however. So the mixer will take the back seat for a little while until i work my butt off enough to be ahead of the game. this is why it sucks that i must keep music to “hobby” status. i have to finish all my other work before i can go crazy with my music.
my mixer proves to be worthy of much more than the $180 spent on it, leaving me happy and hungry for microphones to record stuff with. (aside) by the way my birthday is coming up (end aside).
Things that i plan to do:
- deaden my recording space
- purchase some vital microphones and stands
- move my recording space away from my electrically noisy computer
- open up my strat again for shielding and perform a little surgery
- record a lot
- make it sound good
- post it to the website
- buy more webspace so i can post more things
If you wanna help me out, email me and i’ll tell you where to send your money.
