“Well if you’re travelin’ in the north country fair,
where the wind blows heavy on the boderline,
remember me to the one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Well if you go when the snowflakes storm,
When the rivers freeze and summer ends,
Please see if she’s wearing a coat so warm,
To keep her from the howlin’ winds.

Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
If it rolls and flows all down her breast.
Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
That’s the way I remember her best.

I’m a-wonderin’ if she remembers me at all.
Many times I’ve often prayed
In the darkness of my night,
In the brightness of my day.

So if you’re travelin’ in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.”

– Bob Dylan “Girl from the North Country”

the fall break monster looms nearer

bonjour a tous,

considering the hype for last weekend, a relatively good time I did have with family and friends in lafayette. this good time cosisted of me sleeping and eating homecooked meals made by mom. boy, that was nice. (just as a side note: ever notice how both dave and I frequently blog about food and it’s importance in our lives? )

I did make it out to the movie theater to see “once upon a time in mexico” starring antonio “aka desparado” bandaras and johhny “i am on a roll” depp. the movie was short on plot, but high on action making it the best summer flick of the fall. i mean, it was entertaining in a “lots of bad guys are getting shot with high powered weapons” kind of way. Depp stole the show (he’s now got two excellent roles out in the theaters) and watching his casual charisma on screen has only deepened my decision to grow my hair out. or something.

heard a french song this weekend by edith piaf, “hymn l’amour” and was completely moved. i am such a little baby sometimes.

in other news, only 2 days till fall break. let the campus rejoice.

Update! not really

ok i lied. the rest of the update will not take place this weekend. i don’t want to spoil the surprise. but i will.

i’m writing a song. and i’m not done with it like i thought i was going to be. good news: it should be ready soon. the song is cool though. i’ll let you know that.

anyways! my weekend lacked events. jon, hope you had a blast back at home.

Today’s weather was stunning here in GA, like everywhere else in the south. desiree and i went out to the grassy field and almost fell asleep on our backs. when we awoke, facing the sky, we spotted some sparse water vapor slowly accumulating, coming together to form a cloud, and then the sun’s rays split it apart and completely vaporized it again. wow.

something else cool: i got some vanilla ice cream, and saw a pitcher labelled “Butterscotch” next to it. So i thunk to myself, “Scotch? Buttery Scotch? i must try this”. And so i poured it all over my ice cream. And it was GOOOOOOD. buttery scotched vanilla creamy goodness. delish! one thing that can make my day is a good Dessert.

well i did get some of my hw done this weekend. now i must sleep. so i can finish my hw before class. or during class. or whenever. this is college.

stage one complete

note: for optimum viewing, clear your cache first.

so i was digging through my computer documents the other day, noticing all kinds of writing that i did in the past. Occasionally, i would think “ooh this would be good for the website”. well. i’m wishy washy. and also enthusiastic.

you can now view all of my favorite various samples of my previous literary endeavors in one place! that’s right, the explication page has it all (including one litte ditty from jon!).

Inside, you’ll find several samples of poetry, prose, and just random stuff. Navigate by using the magical bar of magic on the right. Magically, your computer will spit out the literary work of choice in an instant! I love dynamic HTML!

most works were created far far in my past, so don’t be too harsh. However, whenever i write a new thing that i would like to share, i’ll prolly put it up on that page. so lookout!

[this update is stage one of the three-stage update for this weekend. more exciting features to come! yay!]

that’s right and it’s all okay

soooooo,

today is thursday and i survived the week and i believe (read “strongly am inclined to think”) that i did well on all my tests today.

thrilling.

as a co-author of this website i will be following my mentor dave’s example by no longer posting about how i survived “killer days”.

you’ll just know i didn’t if i stop posting. (assuming i can’t get fired from this writing gig…)

tomorrow is friday, this week’s special “best day of the week” award winner. The hype is great. Don’t let me down friday.

tomorrow i also meet dad at his law school seminar.

how funny.

i am in school
dad is in school
my sister is in school
we are all in school.

again, thrilling. especially for dad i am sure (graduating law class of ’72?).

also tomorrow i will be making another weekend appearance in lafayette. legions of adoring friends and family await me there. hopefully.
i am looking forward to a nice weekend with the parental units.

david = win

once again
despite the odds
and the forces of the universe turned against me
i turn hero once again in my own life:
aced *two* tests
turned in a paper
completed chemistry lab without excessive explosions

yes, this is pride.

but. it gets kinda boring, even though i’m excited, writing every wednesday about how i successfully conquered tuesday. so no more tuesday posts. i hope.

By the way. The SM-58 microphone is so cool. i bought the adapters i needed the other day. and i plugged ‘er in. and she works so desirably. my guitar sings through her. recordings will be posted soon.

by the other way. i am in the process of a site-wide content update. completion scheduled for this weekend.

things i have done:
updated college bums page! david b’s picture (with his girlfriend Lauren) is up.
the random image displayer on the left now opens a smaller window.
the “continue reading” now does a nifty little magic trick!
uploaded my poo (recordings) to davidcomeaux.com

just another entry

more daily happenings at the pride and joy of the Great State of Louisiana:

- There is this guy who does yoga in the quad everyday with no shirt, socks or shoes. Not that wierd you say? Did I forget to mention his yoga routine involves a 4 foot long sword? Hmmm…. something tells me that there is a violation of campus law going on here.

- Chalk messages pervade the sidewalks….(if you really want to tell your boyfriend you love him, why don’t you just call him. quit writing it on the sidewalk everyday!)

- The “nature advocates” are again rallying for an air-conditioner for Mike the Tiger. Strangely enough, Mike dosen’t seem to mind the realistic equatorial heat. Meanwhile the boy’s dorm air conditioners are in desperate need of repair, and they lose central cooling frequently. Priorities?

oh and today was a beautiful day. the week is looking up. only six more school days till fall break!

I need a nap. I shall take one. T’will be nice.

impale my eyeballs with my mechanical pencil

its 1 am. the fire alarm has been blaring since 12:30. there is no fire. i’m not leaving.

it’s raining outside. i have 3 tests to study for. i have a lab report to prepare. i have to get des out of here. i have to *eventually* get sleep for my 19 hour day tomorrow, also known as triple torture tuesday.

wtf.

bye.
that is
until
like
thursday
or something.

they call it stormy monday

oh boy another fun week at school and it’s getting off to a great start! (Note the over-enthusiastic sarcasm).

It rained all day today, and despite wearing my patented all-weather-you-can-survive-mount everest raincoat, I still managed to get completely soaked. And, just as I requested, the weather acted like fall and there was a nice cold breeze to make the day absolutely miserable.

On top of that I have two big tests this week on the same darn day, thursday.
Coincidentaly, thursday is usually my favorite day of the week, however, this week I guess the honors will get transferred to friday. Go Friday!

You know there is always a silver lining to every story and the sun did eventually come out today. And I guess I shouldn’t be too upset because I cooked cornbread last night and it came out great! Word to Grandma’s recipe.

Oh! and my good friend Bennet Broussard ran a 17:15 in his 5K Cross Country race this weekend. for those of you who don’t run, that’s uber-fast! I am so happy for him, I just had to let the world know. Mad props to my main running man Ben!

Now time to get back to the homework grind.

as my friend gretchen would say, “peace out.”

random blog: big games and the weekend

well, tis another weekend that has come and gone.

well over 100,000 people were in Baton Rouge this weekend to see a football game that I, a student of the universtiy, could not attend because I could not get tickets. In fact, I couldn’t even get to the grocery store because all the roads within a 5 mile radius of campus get turned into one-ways on game day: All roads lead to the stadium.

oh well……such is college student life.

In other news, I am very excited about cooking and eating red beans and rice tonight. Maybe I’m a simple kinda guy, but I think it’s the small pleasures in life that make the world go round.

Speaking of small pleasures, I miss the comics on Sunday. Since I don’t get the paper, I don’t get the comics.
I think they should be broadcast on T.V., just like the rest of the news. Just still frames of comics for everyone who doesn’t get the local fish rap. That would be nice. And I miss Calvin and Hobbes, my favorite strip ever. Life just ain’t the same without ‘em.

Another week and 3 days of higher learning and it’s fall break! Hooray! Now, if it could just feel like fall instead of summer……

developments

here’s whats going down

went to a classical guitar concert last night, it was so cool. it wasn’t as cool as the piano-violin concert a couple weeks ago. but i loved it because he played a Francisco Tarrega piece. also, the finale was the scrumptious La Catedral by Barrios.

my roommate wants to stop school and become an airplane pilot.

jon emailed me a song he recorded… and i love it.

i got my “4 week progress report” for skool back. and im doing really WELL.

i think i’m going to a pool party this afternoon.

oh yeah and i have 2 tests on tuesday. dang.

my first paycheck is coming in 6 days. word to income.

I’ve been in GA for one month and 4 days.

Ooh and check this out… click on “continue reading”!!!

music update!

okay, here are some great artists i’ve been listining to recently:

will oldham – probably the best singer-songwriter you’ve never heard of. this guy is amazing in a very sad, almost creepy sort of way. when i listen to his music, my blood runs cold. his standout, classic actually, album is I See a Darkness. i think the reviewer at pitchforkmedia.com, the independent record review site, does this album more justice than i can. you can read the review here. read it? good. now you might have noticed that the album is credited to “bonnie prince billy”. mr. oldham has made a career out of name changes, and you can also find his other work credited to his actual name, the palace brothers, and palace, as well as his current moniker. if you make an effort to listen to someone this fall, i really think this man is worth your time. download the title track “i see a darkness”. it’s so good, the late Johnny Cash covered it on his last album. Yep, that Johnny Cash. These songs get into you. Oldham’s funeral dirges, dead sea chanteys, and various other, sometimes baroque, songs are simple, sparse and intense. this is not easy listening. as the reviewer put it, “this is not even music. it can’t be. it’s something else.” oldham is fast becoming the robert johnson of the 21 century (and if you don’t know who rj is i suggest you do yourself a favor and look him up too, you’ll be better for it) it’s hard to be a singer-songwriter nowadays. rarely have i encountered someone this good. check him out.

now speaking of creepy,
devendra banhart – okay this another relative unknown to most folks and that’s probably good. you are either going to like this guy or hate him. his 23 word album title (too long to print here) was recorded in various locations throughout the world, yeah the world, on broken four-tracks and friends’ answering machines. don’t expect high fidelity here folks. what you should expect is a voice that can rise to a witchy screach in an instant, simple very creepy guitar lines, and wild surrealistic lyrics. this guy is a one-instrument pyschedelic folk singer. sounds weird? it is. if you can look for the song “cosmos and demos”. i think it’s a great example of his style and it also has an interesting back story. i’ll share it with you.

autumn

when i stepped out
and the wind kissed my face,
i looked up
into the unending blue
deep autumn sky

the sun,
once a georgia fireball
that left me sweaty
from its lick
and burned me
with its stare,
now visibly pained
from strenuous summer work,
leaned to the side
letting the shadows
ooze further on the ground

like water that spreads
over hot concrete slowly
cooling, darkening.

the infinite celestial blue above
so clear
that i could see
a mile high
an eagle
on wide black wings

circle two
floating,
flying,
L
o
n
g
circles,

but then, pushed
(or pulled, it seemed) by divine wind,
the same wind that
kissed my cheeks,

drift and shrink westward
on a search
always moving on

his purpose

not to stop at every little tree
like the sparrows
and the mocking-birds

but instead

to soar
above worldly obstacles
and inhibitions.

imagine
the life
of the eagle

summer wilts
as winter breathes
over the land
past the hills:
autumn comes
to bring
autumn leaves
in gold
_______

watch the people
shout and cry
and chastise and worry
and cheat and point
and bargain and sneak
and hurt

and my God
dosen’t shout at me
and He dosen’t chastise me
and He dosen’t cheat me
and He dosen’t hurt me

He
kisses my face
with wind

ta-daa

today was tuesday, and i was facing impossible odds. incomplete homework, full schedule, and problems that won’t go away. but i conquered it all. on time. Triple Torture Tuesday gets the Smackdown.

julie called and we had a fun conversation. that made me smile. and i could hear julie smiling on the other side. but i used up all of my fone card.

i looked around wal-mart for half an hour in search of fruit snacks. there must have been some kind of wacky radiation emitting from the wal-mart light bulbs that day, because any normal wavelengths of visible light weren’t reflecting off of the fruit snacks (ahem… they were invisible). all i wanted was some sponge-bob snackies or some gushers or something. i settled for yogurt. but the wal-mart people must have decided to wait til after i left their store today to put out the strawberry-banana-blended wal-mart yogurt that i like. so i looked for granola bars. since they had those, i bought them all. and then i walked up to the store manager and i said “Sir i think you’re not fruity enough.” and he said “Well, Average Consumer, i’ll try to be more fruity” and basically i think he’s going to be more fruity. which hopefully means they will have fruit snacks next time that i can purchase, instead of making me transcend through space and dimension to reach into my inner needs, satisfying the craving for fruit snacks with pure mental effort, by imagining, nay, believing that i am, in fact, eating fruit snacks instead of Granola Bars.

music of the week: the Flaming Lips!!!
(did you see that commercial on VH1 (the only channel on Des’s tv) with the Flaming Lips’ song “Do You Realize???” as the theme? i was so excited. if you don’t know the Lips, go to their website above and click on the Audio tab, where you can play some of their cool music from your browser! it’s cool because the site’s written in Flash and it’s well done too.)
